CACREP-ACES Seeking Licensure Board Input

The CACREP-ACES Competency Based Education Task Force is seeking input from licensing boards about a movement and how changes in the traditional credit based counseling degree would be received by boards.

Articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education or Inside Higher Education noted that due to the high cost of college today, the Federal Government has been exploring and supporting the development of alternative delivery models that take into account previous learning opportunities, real life work experience, or self-paced learning modules that do not require specified seat time in a classroom.  Terms such as Prior Learning Assessments (PLAs) or Competency-based Education Systems (CBEs) used in relationship with these “new” models are not 100% new, as giving credit for home study courses and previous learning experiences has been around for almost 100 years.  What is new is the increased focus and funding by persons and organizations external to academia calling for a closer examination of the benefits of such options by institutions of higher education and accreditors alike.
